Prostate Cancer Resources:

BOOKS

Three of the best books for getting started are:

1. Johns Hopkins Medicine. (2010). Choosing the right treatment for prostate cancer. New York: Remedy Health Media. This brief, to-the-point 97-page guide, which can be purchased and downloaded in pdf format, discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the various methods of treating prostate cancer. What many readers may find particularly useful are disclosures of information about each method that may not appear in all the guides (e.g., controversies over how insurance coverage issues may influence the amount of radiation given per dose in some methods of radiation therapy).

2. Torrey, E. F. (2006). Surviving prostate cancer: What you need to know to make informed decisions. New Haven: Yale University Press. A warm, humane, frank, engaging, and richly informative 280-page guide by "a research psychiatrist and associate director for laboratory research at the Stanley Medical Research Institute," who himself had prostate cancer. It's very readable and includes illuminating, sometimes surprising quotes from men (e.g., Anatole Broyard, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Michael Korda) about their own prostate cancer.

3. Walsh, P. C., & Worthington, J. F. (2007). Dr. Walsh's guide to surviving prostate cancer (2nd ed.). New York: Warner Wellness. This exceptionally detailed and informative 592-page book was co-authored by the Distinguished Service Professor of Urology at the Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins (Walsh) and an award-winning science writer (Worthington).

Because books can become dated in their coverage of the latest research, I've included below a list of recent (i.e., published in 2010, 2011, or 1012) research articles on the various treatment approaches (e.g., watchful waiting, surgery, brachytherapy, external beam radiation, androgen deprivation therapy).

I've also included a list of recent (i.e., published in 2010, 2011, or 2012) articles on psychological aspects of prostate cancer (e.g., stress management, anxiety, depression, PTSD, psychosocial & behavioral interventions).

At the end below are links to web sites that may be useful in finding information, guidance, and support.
